We ensure that the students of TC Beirne School of Law have the best access to career opportunities and training. In addition, we strive to give students the chance to meet face to face with potential employers, with a substantial on-campus presence from most of the large law firms in Brisbane, as well as connections with more diverse legal and non-legal opportunities.

Events

The Career Avenues Panel

The Careers Avenue Panel presents a unique opportunity for students to actively engage with and pose questions to a diverse group of legal professionals, gaining valuable insights into potential career paths within the field of law and strategies for entering specific sectors. The distinguished panel comprises experienced barristers, judicial representatives, legal academics, and practitioners from both in-house and law firm settings. As part of the evening, attendees will enjoy a networking session with canapes and beverages provided.

Speed Engagement Event

This networking event provides an amazing opportunity for law students to engage with professionals from a range of law firms to discuss all things careers. Firms

will be allocated a table, and students given the opportunity to sit with firm representatives, discussing the firm and asking questions for a set increment of time. Students will then rotate to a different table with the opportunity to speak to different firms. Each student will be given the opportunity to express their interest

in a particular firm, and the careers team will hopefully accommodate these preferences.

Clerkship Evening
An evening of brief presentations from each law firm to explain what the firm is about, the clerkship process and their graduate program, followed by a panel discussion to provide tips and tricks for the clerkship application process. These brief descriptors of firms and points of advice are the best way to get to know a firm and what to say in the cover letter before the interview process kicks off.

The 2024 Clerkship Guide will be published later this year and linked here for your convenience.

Annual Professional Drinks

A networking event designed to allow students to have one-on-one conversations with potential employers. The Careers team invites not only our sponsors but a wide range of law and non-law professionals to give students a unique chance to further their career prospects. In recent years, we achieved a perfect 2:1 student to professional ratio, creating an intimate and successful event for employers and students alike.

The event is mainly geared towards those students who are heading into their clerkship year, however, we encourage all students to consider attending.

Barristers Work Experience Program (BWEP)

There is a common problem among law students that you need to have legal work experience to get a legal-orientated job, but to get a legal work experience you need to have a legal-orientated job. It’s the ultimate Catch-22. The Barristers Work Experience Program is designed to circumvent this problem. BWEP is an opportunity for undergraduate students to gain hands on experience with a barrister and develop an understanding of what this career path entails. Students who are placed in BWEP work either for a single barrister or for chambers, and experience many things such as meeting with solicitors or clients, and attending court.

Coffee Catch-ups

Coffee Catch-ups are casual networking events hosted regularly throughout the semester on campus. Students are welcomed to savour free coffee while engaging with representatives from esteemed top-tier and mid-tier firms. These events offer an excellent opportunity for those considering clerkship applications to connect, gather insights, and explore potential professional avenues in a relaxed and informal setting.
