What is law school without good friends? It is boring. Make a bunch of new law school friends at the plethora of UQLS social events throughout the year. With a little help of generous bar tabs, you’ll be on the dance floor as the life of the party in no time. Keep up to date with when and where our events will be held by liking the UQLS and L Card Facebook pages.
All events are 18+, so here is hoping if you’re a first year that your birthday is early in the year so you can attend every event you desire.
Semester 1 Events
L Card Launch Semester 1
To celebrate the life of a new L Card, we host a massive party with QUT and Griffith Law Societies at Friday’s Riverside. The free-flowing bar tab accompanied by some inter-University rivalry makes for an amazing day. The only thing that makes the day better is that you get free entry merely for buying an L Card from the UQLS! Join us and watch the sun set over the big brown snake from the comfort of Friday’s Riverside.
The most sought after UQLS event of the year, Law Ball provides everything – a chance to wear a dinner suit or formal dress, a full night of free drinks and food, a new profile picture, and a dance floor you won’t forget. Typically Law Ball attracts many more people than just law students because of its renowned excellence, so tickets sell out very quickly. Get your group of friends organised to buy tickets the day they go on sale so you don’t miss out!
The best way to shake off that post-Law Ball depression is to just get back together with the pals and keep the party going at Pub Crawl. A nice walk through the city with friends while mildly intoxicated just makes your heart warm. Usually a detour through the Court precinct makes for an interesting game of ‘who is going to do something that will stop them getting admitted?’. Tickets to Pub Crawl sell out even faster than Law Ball, so make sure you’re ready to buy your ticket the first day they are released.
End of Semester Drinks
End Semester One surrounded by great friends who can sympathise with how torturous Torts A was. Relax with an (almost) endless bar tab overlooking the Brisbane River as the sun sets. Free entry for all UQLS members means there is no reason to miss out.
Semester 2 Events
L Card Launch Semester 2
To celebrate the beginning of a new semester, we join QUT and Griffith Law students to drink a generous bar tab at Friday’s Riverside. Law School rivalries can be fought on the dance floor, rather than formal rankings. There is free entry for L Card holders, so it only makes sense to attend!
Battle of the Bands
Whether you’re musically talented, just like live music, or just like drinking with friends, Battle of the Bands is for you! We put some of the best law student bands up on stage to battle it out. All guests get to vote for their favourite band all while drinking a generous tab. For only a nominal entry price, bring together all your friends (law student or not) to support your colleagues’ musical endeavours.
The pinnacle of class, Law Dinner is the time to get the coattails and formal dresses spinning. We join to celebrate the graduating class and valedictorian. We’re joined by T.C Beirne staff and solicitors and partners from our sponsor law firm. The night is all topped off by a keynote speech from someone of great importance. In the past, we’ve been graced by Supreme, Federal and High Court justices, Queens Counsels, and important writers and theorists. Tickets sell out, so get in quick!
Renowned as the best event for law students of the year, Croquet is just an afternoon of BBQ, sangria and plenty of croquet. If your new profile picture from Law Ball or Law Dinner already seems outdated, then Croquet is your best option for a new one! Don your best white linen clothes, swing the sweaters over your shoulders and tie up your boat shoes, then join your law school friends for an afternoon of fun.
Final Year Fling
Farewell your first year surrounded by your law school friends. Friday’s Riverside’s deck is once again filled with law students comparing their exam answers and analysing the recent High Court developments. Once again, this is a free event for UQLS members so you have no excuse to not attend.
