UQLS University of Queensland Law Society
Competitions
Welcome to competitions in 2008 from your Competitions Convenors, Florence Chen and Faheem Anwar.

The UQLS runs a series of competitions throughout the year that encourage students to develop practical legal skills, including advocacy and alternative dispute resolution. There are 5 competitions that are run through the UQLS: mooting, witness examination, paper presentation, negotiation and client interviewing.

These competitions are excellent for getting to know your fellow law students, learning about the practical side of the law and developing your legal research skills. It doesn’t hurt that there are end-of-comps bar tabs and more coffee breaks than you could imagine! The winners of each of the senior competitions will represent UQ in their competition at the following ALSA Conference (2008 will be in Tasmania). ALSA representatives are encouraged to take up the opportunity of judging and helping with organisation of their competition in future years.

STUDENTS WANTING TO TAKE PART IN ANY OF THE COMPETITIONS

MUST HOLD AN L-CARD!!

These can be purchased on market day in O-Week or from the UQLS office any time during the year.

Resources

There are a number of resources available to help you with your preparation for the UQLS competitions. The Mooting Manual prepared he Mooting Advisory Bench (MAB) is a comprehensive 'how to moot' guide. The Law School website also has a number of mooting resources which you might find useful.

Regardless of which competition you have entered, the UQLS Competitions Handbook is a great place to begin your preparation. It provides an overview of the various competitions and contains many useful tips.

A How-to-Moot Seminar will be held in the first week of Semester One in the Law Library Moot Court at 6pm. Please feel free to attend.
