Negotiation Competition

This year, the Senior Negotiation Competition is sponsored by Clayton Utz. The First Year Negotiation Competition is sponsored by DibbsBarker.
Negotiation involves two teams acting as solicitors for opposing clients. Teams consist of 2 students trying to resolve the problem at hand and negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. Rather than being heavily based in substantive law like mooting, negotiation is "issue based". The main idea of the competition is to be able to consider the issues at hand and your client's interests to negotiate a mutually acceptable solution. It is about the process by which you reach a conclusion and whether it suits both parties, rather than just getting the other party to agree to everything your client wants and leaving the other party high and dry. This competition involves much less preparation than competitions like mooting, but the benefits are just as great.
In 2010, there will also be a First Year Negotiation Competition. It will be conducted in the same way as the Senior Competition, with the focus in the problems being on addressing your client's interests. This is an excellent opportunity for first years to participate in the competitions and start developing these valuable legal skills in a more comfortable setting. It is also a great opportunity for competitiors to meet other first years.
Please note that the First Year Competition will have a slightly different structure to the Senior Competition. Each team will compete in 2 rounds, and the emphasis will be on feedback and developing your negotiation skills rather than having a more competitive climate. Two outstanding teams will be selected to compete in a grand final, there will be no quarter finals or semi finals. Please email t.horton @uqls.com if you have any further questions.
SIGN ON IS NOW CLOSED FOR BOTH COMPETITIONS.
BEFORE SIGNING ON, PLEASE NOTE:
This year, there will be a limit placed on the number of teams able to compete in the negotiation competitions. This limit will be twenty (20) teams per competition. This means that there will be 20 first year teams, and 20 senior teams. This is due to resource constraints and to ensure the quality of competition and judging. Please note that if you do sign on and you drop out before the sign on close date, you will be banned from all future competitions for 2010.
