First Year and Senior Mooting
This year, the UQLS First Year and Senior Moot are both sponsored by Corrs Chambers Westgarth.
Mooting is the most popular and prestigious of the competitions, as it simulates an actual appeal in a court room.
There are two teams in each moot – one representing the Appellant and the other the Respondent. Teams may consist of three people although only two people from each team speak in a moot. Members of a three person team may, if they wish, rotate speakers in each round and all three members can be involved in the research and preparation for each round.
The First Year Mooting Competition is for first years only. The problem is loosely based on the content of your first semester courses. It will offer an opportunity to improve your research skills and develop your oral advocacy skills for later years.
The Senior Competition will encompass broader areas of law and students in their early years should be aware that they may not be completely familiar with the areas covered. It is recommended that competitors have some prior mooting experience, although it is not necessary. Many competitors in previous years have not mooted before and have done very well. If you haven't mooted before, or would like a bit of a refresher, you are encouraged to attend the "How to Moot" Seminar, which will be held on Monday 15 March in the Moot Court (in the Law Library, on the ground floor) from 5pm to 6pm.
For both the Junior and Senior Competition, there will be two preliminary moots. The 8 teams with the highest scores will progress to the Quarter Finals. From then, it will be knock-outs - if you win your moot, you go through to the Semi Finals/ Finals. If you lose, you are out of the competition (and strongly encouraged to try other competitions!). There will be one problem for the two preliminary rounds, and another problem for the three final rounds.
