The Australian Law Students' Association ('ALSA') is a national not-for-profit association comprising law student societies from around the country, cumulatively representing approximately 28,000 students.
From the ALSA Website...
ALSA's services can be divided into three broad categories:
- Acting as a national representative for Australian law students' interests;
- Providing direct services for Australian law students; and
- Providing a knowledge sharing forum for law student societies (LSSs) across Australian universities
UQ law students are represented on ALSA Council by the UQLS President and Vice-President (Education & ALSA). To find out more about ALSA, check out www.alsa.net.au
ALSA Conference
The ALSA Conference is the highlight of the ALSA Calendar. Held over seven days every July, the Conference brings together over 500 law students from 33 law schools around Australia. It is one of the largest student conferences in Australia, and the only conference of its kind for law students. The Conference is home to the national finals of Mooting, Client Interviewing, Negotiation, Witness Examination, Paper Presentation, International Humanitarian Law Mooting and the Kirby Cup, as well as the Australian Legal Education Forum, meetings of ALSA Council, Gala Opening and Closing Dinners with key-note speakers and two theme nights.
The 2009 Conference was held in Brisbane. In 2010, the Conference will be co-hosted by University of Adelaide, Flinders University and the University of South Australia by down in wonderful Adelaide.
UQLS pays the registration and travel expenses for the winners of each of its internal practical legal competitions to represent UQ at the ALSA Conference (registration to the conference includes hotel accommodation and entry to all social events).
UQ law students can also attend conference as general delegates. This is a great chance to meet law students from other universities around Australia and see how ALSA operates from the inside.
